For the life of one
如果你比较忌讳“死”这个字眼的话,for the life of one再实用不过了。
看看for the life of one的定义:Although trying hard, as in “I can’t for the life of me remember his name.” This expression is always used hyperbolically, that is, one’s life is not at all endangered.
当然,除了最常用的for the life of me,还有for the life of you/him/her等等。
I can’t for the life of me understand why everybody is calling this “art”. It’s a bunch of crap, if you ask me!
If you can’t for the life of you remember how to spell “refrigerator”, use “fridge” instead.
For the life of him, Jimmy just can’t comprehend why Sarah enjoys shopping that much. Likewise, Sarah for the life of her can’t understand why Jimmy is so crazy about baseball.
上面给出的例子分别是can’t understand, can’t remember和can’t comprehend,可见一斑。
