Steal one’s thunder
比较熟悉美国流行文化的朋友一定知道People Magazine。在美国，它不但稳坐娱乐/明星类杂志的龙头位置，销量更高居所有杂志综合排名的第一。大众对明星多感兴趣可见一斑。
很自然的，明星们都以能否上People的封面来衡量自己有没有地位、是否大红大紫。不少名人甚至不惜定期来一些比较疯狂的举动，只为了引起轰动，可以登上People的封面，保持自己的人气。
最新一期People已经问世。由于Christina Aguilera刚刚结婚，很多人（包括我）都以为她铁定是封面人物，结果她只出现在右上角那么小的一个格子里。风光的封面位置又被她多年的老对手Britney Spears抢了去，因为她生子后第一次将小孩的照片公布于媒体。
这种情形用steal one’s thunder来形容再贴切不过。用简单的话说，steal one’s thunder就是“抢某人的风头”。它的定义是：To upstage someone; to destroy the effect of what someone does or says by doing or saying the same thing first.（赶在某人的前面做或说某件事，从而抢去某人的风头。）
定义中的by doing or saying the same thing first可以忽略不计。只要是抢风头，不管是不是同样的事，都叫steal one’s thunder。比如Britney和Christina的例子。两人一个正式带小孩亮相，一个结婚，并不是做一样的事，但Britney stole Christina’s thunder是完全正确的说法。
既然不必做一样的事，by doing or saying the same thing first从何而来？它其实源于steal one’s thunder的本义：盗用某人的想法为自己牟利。这背后还有个真实的故事：John Dennis是十八世纪初期的一位剧作家。他发明了一个thunder machine（使舞台可以发出轰隆隆声响的仪器）用在自己的作品Appius and Virginia中，以增强演出效果。演了没几场，Appius and Virginia就因为不受欢迎而被迫取消。几天之后，一出新剧Macbeth开始上演。John Dennis去看了首场演出，发现他的thunder machine被新剧照搬过去，自己却没得到任何的承认，于是气愤地喊道：“They stole my thunder!”
时至今日，steal one’s thunder这种“盗用某人想法”的本义仍在继续使用，不过远不如“抢某人风头”的引申义常见。
这不，Britney和Christina的封面之争还没降温，更劲爆的消息已经出炉：Jessica Simpson和Nick Lachey正式分手！
Jessica Simpson刚出道的时候最多只能算个“小天后”，自从和Nick Lachey结婚、两人的真人秀创造收视奇迹后才跨入巨星行列，跟Britney、Christina有的一拼。娱乐圈不成文的规矩是“离婚大过天”，所以哪对明星夫妻分手必然压倒当时其它的热门新闻，成为热中之热。（还记不记得Brad Pitt和Jennifer Aniston分手的情形?）

FRIENDS里，Chandler向Monica求婚的后一集也是用了这个说法（好象是701/623？反正标题就是the one with monica’s thunder)。Monica 对Rachel大喊：You kinda stole my thunder! 哈，超搞笑。

I’ve got one query: there’s steal his/her thunder, why not steal all their thunders, but steal all their thunder?
