Chinian

Listen, I’m Chinian, not Chinese (via Language Log)
Group I: American, Australian, Austrian, Canadian, German, Italian, Norwegian, Russian…
Group II: Chinese, Congolese, Japanese, Nepalese, Portuguese, Sudanese, Vietnamese…
In the State of Ohio in the United States, what do local residents call themselves? Ohioese? Wrong. Ohioan. In Toronto, Canada, the people there call themselves yes, you guessed it […]

Owned

Memoirs of a Geisha(艺妓回忆录)当然有功劳,不过真正的导火线还是前段时间The Smoking Gun网站踢爆的James Frey自传丑闻。
Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince。

Oprah Winfrey’s been had.
(E.g. I have a car = I own a car.) Oprah Winfrey’s been owned.
To be made a fool of; to be embarrassed(出洋相、被耍了)。
A: Wait, West Virginia is a state? I […]

Paraskevidekatriaphobia

Friday, January 13th, 2006

以前虽然见过paraskevidekatriaphobia(“Friday the 13th恐惧症”)这个词,但从未上心。
paraskevidekatriaphobia (pair.uh.skee.vee.dek.uh.tree.uh.FOH.bee.uh) n. Fear of Friday the 13th.
—paraskevidekatriaphobic adj., n.
—paraskevidekatriaphobe n.

Today’s tongue torturer appears to come from the Greek words paraskevi, Friday, and dekatria, thirteen, with the suffix -phobia tacked on for the fear factor.

Wing it

CNN: Michael J. Fox’s new role
小屏幕上的Family Ties、Spin City,大屏幕上的Back to the Future系列,都是绝对的经典。
Because Fox doesn’t know how extreme the symptoms of his illness will be on any given day, he had to wing it in suggesting Post’s own health problems.
To say or do something without preparation, forethought, or sufficient information or […]

“Beg the question” revisited

Saturday, January 7th, 2006

A: But “begging the question” is mostly used today to mean “raising the question”!
B: I know! It’s so wrong.
A: Well, I suppose that begs the question, T-Rex: if it’s used more often to mean “raises the question” than “a fallacy of presumption”, doesn’t that suggest that the definition of the phrase has evolved?
B: No, […]
