Murphy willing
前段时间断断续续看完了TVB的剧集識法代言人。片子很一般，不过我倒是记住了里面提到的Murphy’s Law，也就是墨菲法则。这个法则的大致意思就是：In a given situation, if anything can possibly go wrong, it will go wrong. （任何可能出错的事必将出错。）
我这人运气向来不怎么样，是“只要可能出错，就一定出错”的最佳代言人。“哈，还好没发生，居然给我逃过去了”的好事在我身上发生的概率接近于零。我还在想，为什么“侥幸”总跟我无缘，搞了半天是Murphy’s Law盯上我了。
说来也巧，刚记住Murphy’s Law，我就在一个英文blog里看到了Murphy willing这个短语。通过上下文，我非常肯定作者的意思就是God willing。
God willing是“如上帝许可，如果不出意外”的意思，在希望事情能按计划顺利进行的时候说，是比较口语化的表达方式。比如：I’ll graduate next month, God willing. （如果一切顺利，我下个月就可以毕业了。）
直觉告诉我，Murphy willing应该是Murphy’s Law和God willing的结合体。于是搜索了一番，果然在Word Spy找到了答案：
Murphy willing idiom. If nothing goes wrong. Also: Murphy-willing.
Notes:
This phrase is a secular play on the very old (15th century) phrase God willing, and it comes from Murphy’s Law: in a given situation, if anything can go wrong， it will. Murphy’s Law was named after U.S. Air Force Captain Edward A. Murphy, who performed deceleration studies in the 1940s and noted that if things could be done wrongly, they would be.
也就是说，Murphy willing就是God willing的意思，表示“如果一切顺利、不出状况的话”。略微不同的是，Murphy willing去掉了宗教的成分，更适合我这种没啥信仰的人。而且因为Murphy’s Law讲的就是出错不出错的事儿，所以我觉得Murphy willing显得更巧妙一些。编一段对话如下：
A: How’s it going, buddy? （最近怎么样啊？）
B: Great. I’ll get my PhD next month, Murphy willing! （很好。如果一切顺利的话，我下个月就可以拿到博士学位了。）
A: Wow, you are gonna be a doctor soon. Congratulations! （哇，你马上要成为博士了。恭喜！）
B: Thanks. How’s life treating you? （谢谢。你过得怎么样呢？）
A: Not bad, I guess. My wife’s pregnant. We’re gonna have a baby soon, Murphy willing! （也还不错。我老婆怀孕了。如果不出状况的话，我们很快就要有个宝宝了！）
B: That’s fantastic news! I’m so happy for you. （这消息太棒了！我真为你高兴！）

学法的，对这个法则颇是感兴趣啊，不过貌似跟法律没啥关系的说……
不过上面的话很有道理啊：A shortcut is the longest distance between two points…
A light at the end of a tunnel is the headlamp of an oncoming train. 这句像是说“饥不择食，慌不择路”。

感觉最后的对话体现不出Murphy willing和God willing的区别喔……
我也是“只要可能出错，就一定出错”的代言人。例如桌面打翻一杯水，肯定会湿到最重要的那份文件，嘿嘿。

本来就没实质性的区别啊。看你喜欢说Murphy还是God，仅此而已。
