Say it ain’t so

Sunday, June 25th, 2006

这一天终于还是来临了。
Agassi says adios
Agassi Announces Retirement After US Open

Andre Agassi’s voice wavered and his eyes welled up. After years of dealing with injuries, after months of contemplation, he finally spoke the words he knew he had to, at the place he knew he had to.
Turning what was expected to be a routine pre-Wimbledon news conference into […]

最近看到的几篇不得不分享的文章:
1) Keanu Reeves Does NOT Suck, And I Can Prove It

整篇文章都很有意思,但特别引起我注意的是这两条:
6. Keanu’s name means “cool breeze over the mountains” in Hawaiian, which is pretty cool. Compare that to Jean Claude Van Damme, which is loosely translated in German as “giant douchebag”.
32. His name is actually pronounced “kay-ah-nu”, not “key-ah-nu”, and yet never makes a fuss […]

Why Blog Post Frequency Does Not Matter Anymore

推荐好文一篇:Why Blog Post Frequency Does Not Matter Anymore

What matters most is whether you are reaching your target audience (which may be narrow and focused), not necessarily how many people read your posts. Engaging with the audience you want to have a relationship with is a much smarter strategy than posting frequently.
这正是我一贯的策略,呵呵。

I have heard many bloggers […]

Difficult names

Tuesday, June 6th, 2006

Popwatch是Entertainment Weekly杂志的blog,我常去的地方。除了讨论流行文化,那里的文章还常常涉及到语言类的内容,笔调非常幽默,每每看来都让我有找到知音的感觉。最近讨论明星名字拼写的这篇又让我乐了一把。
I’ll get the ball rolling with my selection, Scarlett Johansson, whose tricky arrangement of consonants (two Ts! two Ss!) and vowels (sen? son?) sends me scrambling to IMDb to fact-check myself every time.

这个情况跟我实在太吻合了! Scarlett Johansson的名字我总也拼不对。要么前面少t,要么后面多h、少s,见鬼了。按说她的名字看起来也并不特别难,真是奇怪。
让我比较头疼的明星名字还有:
Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje (既不会拼也不会读,彻底lost!)
Alanis Morissette (她的姓跟Mississippi有一拼!)
Arnold Schwarzenegger (不作弊,你曾经拼对过吗?)
Maggie/Jake Gyllenhaal (为什么不是Gylenhall呢?)
Mary Lynn Rajskub (哪怕背诵24遍,记不住就是记不住)
Matthew McConaughey (听说最近刚跟Penelope Cruz分手)
发觉这些明星的名大多以A或M打头。巧合?
BTW,地球人都知道Brad Pitt和Angelina Jolie的孩子终于出生了的消息吧?(这孩子名叫Shiloh Nouvel,也够难拼的。)几乎是同时,Jennifer Aniston和Vince Vaughn的新片The […]

French leave

Thursday, June 1st, 2006

今天无意间看到French leave这个短语,就顺手翻了一下词典。牛津的解释:
take French leave (BrE) to leave work without asking permission first 擅离职守
这好像跟我印象里的意思不太一样,于是又在网上搜索了一下。
Merriam-Webster: an informal, hasty, or secret departure; Etymology: from an 18th century French custom of leaving a reception without taking leave of the host or hostess
The American Heritage: An informal, unannounced, or abrupt departure. From the 18th-century French custom of leaving without […]
