今天短短几个小时之内居然连续五次听到或看到give someone a run for their money，邪了！
该短语的定义见此，我觉得比较贴切的中文翻译是“有得一拼”。例句：I think only Liverpool will be able to give Manchester United a run for their money next season.
我觉得翻成“势均力敌”也马马虎虎，不过还是“有得一拼”更贴切。因为give someone a run for their money有“水平很接近，不会让对方轻松获胜，但最终还是以微弱劣势败下阵来”的意味。“势均力敌”则是完全五五开，谁都可能赢。
这个短语的来源我始终没搞清楚。有说跟跑步有关的，也有说跟赛马有关的，似乎没有官方定论。我觉得相对比较靠谱的是这个说法：

很久以来，我一直以为same difference就是“相同的不同之处”的意思。比如你发现A和B的不同之处，你朋友发现了C和D的不同之处。一对比，你们意识到A与B的不同和C与D的不同是一样的，这就是same difference。
最近看的一本书里接连出现了好几个same difference的例子，但明显不是这种用法。从上下文可以判断出来，same difference就是same thing的意思。摘录其中两个：
A: I can’t make a copy of something from an employee’s file and send it on to the police.
B: Ex-employee.
A: Same difference.
A: Her boyfriend came and picked it up.
B: Ex-boyfriend.
A: Same difference.

早就听说过Vitas这位歌手，在网上也经常看到有人讨论他的超高音，但由于种种原因，我始终没有接触他的作品。
直到有一天，午休的时候看到数位女同事对着电脑集体呈花痴状，出于好奇去看了一下，才终于听到了Vitas的歌声。她们正在欣赏他的演唱会视频，其中一位还忙不迭地告诉我：“他是有史以来在The Grand Kremlin Palace（克里姆林宫）开演唱会的最年轻的歌手！太厉害了！”
看了一段，传说中的“超高音”果然出现了。我的感觉只能用四个字概括：哎呀妈呀。此人乃绝对的freak of nature（褒义），太不可思议了。
接着应邀去参观了最迷Vitas的那位同事的电脑，浏览她收藏的所有Vitas的音乐录影带。至此，我彻底被他的唱功折服，虽然还远没到歌迷的程度，但至少我可以算finally jumping on the Vitas bandwagon了。
Jump on the bandwagon的本义跟选举有关：

很早以前在收音机和电视还没有出现的时代，竞选官职的人为了吸引公众的注意往往会雇一个乐队，让他们在一辆马车上演奏。马车上贴了许多标语，鼓励人们投某某人的票。这种有乐队的马车就叫bandwagon。要是这个候选人特别受人拥护，那些无足轻重的小政客就会登上那辆马车，让人们知道他们和这位名人关系很好。这就是jump on the bandwagon。
从字面上来看，这是“跳上有乐队的马车”的意思。实际上这种马车已经不存在，但是这个俗语还是经常使用的，它的意思是：站在某候选人一边，表示支持。
不知道是不是因为马车不存在的关系，这个短语现在已经很少直接跟选举挂钩了。大多数情况下，它引申为“随大流，顺应某种流行趋势”。它的定义也充分说明了这一点：

If people jump on the bandwagon, they get involved in something that has recently become very popular.
除了直接说jump on the bandwagon，还可以在bandwagon前面加上具体内容，表示自己顺应的是什么流行趋势，换句话说，“跳上的是什么马车”。比如我上面提到的jump on the Vitas bandwagon。再给几个例子：
